Why are some casket prices more than others?
It depends upon the materials with which the casket is made, and the labor-hours invested. Obviously, a casket made of bronze would be priced higher than one made of steel. Wood caskets require more hours of highly skilled workmanship, and this increases the price. A casket with a crepe interior would be priced less than one with an interior of velvet because of the cost of the material.
Metal caskets with a gasket are priced higher than those without, but the concept of ‘protective’ features on a casket are unrealistic: over time, the gasket deteriorates and intrusion of the elements is inevitable. Thus, funeral directors are prohibited by law from saying a casket “seals”.
It is futile to fight nature. If concern over intrusion of elements into the casket is an issue, consider above-ground mausoleum entombment. It is best to purchase whichever casket you are most comfortable with, within your budget.
