Does VA pay for veterans' funerals?

Although the Veterans Administration does not pay for complete funerals, it does provide certain merchandise, services and reimbursements to eligible veterans. Your local VA office or funeral home can provide you with the variety of benefits available. In general, any veteran with a discharge other than dishonorable is entitled to be buried in an accepting national or state veterans’ cemetery.

In a state or national cemetery, a grave liner and stone marker are included. When a veteran is buried in a cemetery not owned by the State or Federal Government, the veteran may receive a bronze or marble marker marked with the veteran's rank, war served and religious icon. When burial is not in a state or national veterans’ cemetery, the VA will reimburse, for eligible veterans, up to $300 plot allowance and $300 burial allowance. Other specific circumstances, better explained by your VA benefits counselor, may entitle a veteran to additional burial-related benefits.
